World Hypertension Day

May 17, 2025 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

World Hypertension Day (WHD) is observed every year on May 17th to raise global awareness about hypertension and its health risks. Organized by the World Hypertension League (WHL) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the day aims to educate the public about the importance of screening, early detection, prevention, and management of high blood pressure.

In Kenya, the Kenya Cardiac Society (KCS) joins the Ministry of Health (MoH) and other partners as a key stakeholder in commemorating this important day through impactful national and county-level activities.

Objectives of WHD

  1. Raise Awareness: Educate the public about hypertension, its risk factors, and how to prevent it.
  2. Conduct Screenings: Offer free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, recognizing that diabetes is a major co-morbidity in people with hypertension.
  3. Promote Healthy Lifestyles: Encourage physical activity, a balanced diet, stress management, and the reduction of alcohol and tobacco use.
  4. Provide Educational Resources: Distribute free Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials to empower individuals to take charge of their heart health.
  5. Celebrate in Unity: Bring people together to emphasize the power of collective action in promoting cardiovascular well-being.
  6. Strengthen Data for Decision-Making: Analyze screening data collected during May Measurement Month to support evidence-based policy and health system strengthening.
