Dr. Bernard Samia (President Kenya Cardiac Society)

Dear conference participants and colleagues,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this 39th Annual Scientific Congress and Annual General Meeting of the Kenya Cardiac Society being held in Mombasa Kenya from the 27th to 30th July 2022.

This meeting is a very important event in the calendar of the society as members will be accorded an opportunity to digress from their routine work and assignments and not only share cutting edge scientific knowledge but also enrich their social dimensions. The meeting is occurring at a time when the community of healthcare workers is adopting to the new norm of care provision occasioned by challenges from the COVID pandemic. Lessons learnt over the last two years and unprecedented innovations now inculcated in daily practice have had an immense impact on sustaining and improving cardiovascular care not only in our country but across the globe.

This meeting follows close on the heels a very successful regional conference held at the same venue last year in partnership with PASCAR, where our local practitioners interacted with those from across the continent and even beyond. We are happy once again to have participation from cardiovascular practitioners from the neighboring countries of Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, South Africa and PASCAR at large just to mention but a few. Special tribute goes the World Heart Federation, the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology whose top leadership and scholars have gladly agreed to participate in this conference like the previous years.

The theme for this year’s forum is “Enhancing Access to Cardiovascular Disease Care through Capacity Building, Quality Improvement and Innovation”. Such focus could not have come at a better time when we are grappling with challenges of affording healthcare for the populace. Our country is facing a rising burden of CVDs against a background of poor access to healthcare, inadequate human resource and low levels of innovation in handling these challenges. The scientific sessions lined up will go a long way in addressing these aspects of healthcare.

Delegates are encouraged to attend in person with observance of COVID protocols. Some of our international faculty will deliver their sessions through a virtual platform. The pre-congress day will be covering topics on imaging, both trans-esophageal and transthoracic. Subsequent days will have tracks covering topics in adult and pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, nursing care, health policies and abstract presentations.

This meeting brings together participants from healthcare institutions, academic backgrounds, research facilities, pharmaceutical/technology industry and healthcare administrators to discuss the contributions of each sector in improving the outcomes in cardiovascular care.

The meeting is being held at one of the most sought after venues at the coastal town of Mombasa, Pride Inn, which boasts of excellent conferencing facilities, extra-ordinary accommodation and unrivalled mouthwatering culinary services. Away from the meeting venue, our guests will have a chance to sample the touristic city of Mombasa and its rich ancient history and culture. A visit to Fort Jesus Park and Museum, the Haller Park and the refurbished Mama Ngina Waterfront will definitely be a worthy and indelible experience.

I wish to salute my Executive Committee, the Scientific Committee and the Event Organizing Committee for the tireless efforts they have put in to ensure the success of this event. We are greatly indented to our sponsors who have unreservedly supported us to host this magnificent event.

Once again feel welcome and enjoy your participation in all the sessions.

AHSANTENI SANA.
