August 16, 2025The national celebration of World Hypertension Day 2025 took place on 16th May at Kamukunji Grounds in Nyeri County, under the theme “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer!” The event brought together healthcare professionals, government officials, partners, and the public to promote awareness, early detection, and management of hypertension.
Key highlights included a procession, opening speeches by key leaders such as Dr. Gladwel Gatheca (Ministry of Health) and Dr. Bernard Samia (Kenya Cardiac Society), and the launch of national protocols for managing various non-communicable diseases at the primary healthcare level.
A major component of the day was a free medical camp where over 400 individuals were screened for conditions including hypertension, diabetes, mental health, cervical cancer, eye problems, and nutritional issues. Of those screened, 11.1% were found to have high blood pressure and were referred for further management.
The event also featured health exhibitions, community performances, a survivors’ forum, and fitness sessions, all aimed at reinforcing the importance of preventive healthcare. The celebration concluded with a reaffirmation of government and partner commitment to integrating hypertension awareness and control into routine healthcare services.
